Jessica Binet
Project Officer (Archaeology & Anthropology)
Jessica Binet has a Bachelor of Archaeology from Macquarie University in Sydney, and is currently completing a Master of Research in Anthropology and Archaeology. Her master’s thesis is centred on representations and classifications of Indigenous and First Nations people, particularly within ethnoarchaeology, anthropology, and archaeology. It is primarily a decolonial project and aims to bring to light the various ways that academia, museum settings, and cultural heritage industries perpetuate negative historical tropes.
Jessica has been privileged with the opportunity to excavate both at home and abroad. During her studies she participated in an excavation in the south of Israel, on an Iron Age settlement site. She has also helped to uncover the past of Parramatta in Sydney, excavating in an area containing both Historical and Aboriginal archaeology. These experiences shaped her skills in archaeological methodologies from the very beginning of researching projects to their excavation and consequential interpretation. Her love of fieldwork and travel has now brought her to Western Australia.
Working in many roles in the cultural heritage and museum sectors, Jessica’s passion for sharing knowledge about history was consolidated with her work at Macquarie University’s Museum of Ancient Cultures. Here, she aided in the research and creation of museum exhibitions and participated in museum cataloguing and collections management. Her time spent at the Museum made her acutely aware of the connections we make with our material culture and the stories these objects have the potential to tell.
In her time at university, Jessica received several awards for academic achievement, including multiple for her application and understanding of anthropological theory. This is due to her keen interest in understanding how our society functions, particularly in its use and perception of history. She values hard work and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others. As such, Jessica has been accepted to present at the Origins7 conference in Paris and will also be published later this year in a Palgrave Macmillan volume.
Her interest in archaeology and anthropology is rooted in storying, and the way our representations of the past are intimate reflections of our thoughts, hopes, and concerns for the future. She therefore regards her role in the preservation of Australia’s cultural heritage as incredibly important because of the many stories that could be lost, but are instead, saved. Jessica is proud to be a part of Trace Archaeology, and is excited for the role she is privileged to play in the preservation of Australia’s cultural heritage.

Hannah Anthony
Associate (Botany)
Hannah, born and raised in Singapore, is a passionate advocate for environmental conservation and sustainability. After completing her secondary education in Singapore, Hannah embarked on a transformative academic journey at Murdoch University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Development with two minors in Wildlife Conservation and Nature-based Tourism. During her university experience, she had the privilege of partaking in a variety of flora and fauna studies. Hannah has gained knowledge and experience in planning scientific research, data collection, data processing, and report writing while completing a range of on-ground surveys and desktop research.
Hannah has assisted in surveys regarding the Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) and viable food resources at parks and reserves surrounding Murdoch University, where she used technical equipment and methodologies including a clinometer, Geographic Positioning System and quadrats. She also assisted in a Quenda (Isoodon fusciventer) Survey where she gained hands-on experience in setting up pitfall and cage traps, establishing and servicing camera traps, microchipping, data entry and processing, and maintaining artificial refuges for the quendas. Throughout her studies, Hannah delved into the complexities of environmental, social, and economic issues, gaining a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between ecosystems and human well-being.
During Hannah’s final year at Murdoch University, she joined the South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) as a Sustainable Development intern under the supervision of the Education and Promotion Manager. Hannah participated in restoration projects through planting days, focusing primarily on wetlands and salt marshes. Through the range of environmental education programs offered by SERCUL to schools and communities, Hannah educated clients on the identification of macroinvertebrates found in Perth’s wetlands and rivers and their rate of sensitivity to pollution; strategies to reduce mosquito-bred diseases within communities; phosphorous entering our waterways; and recommended Western Australian native flora species to plant in one’s garden and their traditional uses. Hannah has worked on Water Quality Monitoring projects with local government agencies to test the water quality of a site and collect live macroinvertebrate samples to observe the health of the site. This sparked a passion in Hannah for educating schools and communities regarding sustainability-related issues within the Swan Coastal Plain.
Hannah joined SERCUL as a Landcare Field Technician after her internship experience. Her 1-year of experience in the Environmental Services Team has provided her with knowledge in implementing large and small-scale restoration projects using a range of native plant species, and the logistics required. As Hannah obtained and completed a Pest Management Technician License, she was trusted to use chemicals including Glyphosate and Fusilade to target invasive plant species in areas containing high-density native vegetation. Thus, it was essential for Hannah to identify and recognise the targeted weed species, and their native lookalikes found on the Swan Coastal Plain. Hannah is also knowledgeable in manual weed control measures using equipment and manpower.
Hannah continues to volunteer with SERCUL and Perth City Farm through environmental education and assisting in one-off sustainability events. In her free time, she upskills herself by enrolling in courses such as Leadership, Project Management, Statistics, and Geographical Information Systems(GIS). She hopes that through her time at TRACE Enterprises and volunteering opportunities, she will continue to gain essential skills in flora and fauna identification, scientific report writing, statistical analysis, and GIS.
As Hannah continues to embark on her journey, she remains steadfast in her commitment to protecting and preserving the precious ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.
